Disney icon tutorial!

Today we learn how to make an icon similar to this:
(credit for the screen cap goes to http://magicalscreencaps.com/) from this:

This was made in Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0, but it's very easy and can be translated! Ready?

1. Open up your base, crop it, and resize it to 100x100 pixels.

2. Duplicate your base (bottom layer), and set it to screen 100% opacity. If your icon is already light, you'll need to adjust your opacity a bit.

3. Make a new layer (shift+control+n for Photoshop users), and fill it with this color: 04072a. Set this layer to exclusion 100% opacity, and make sure it's the very top layer.

4. Make a new layer, and fill it with ccf2ff. Set the layer to color burn 100% opacity, and this layer should be on top of the last one.

5. It's coming along, but it doesn't look contrasted enough to me. So I make a brightness/contrast adjustment layer (Layer+New Adjustment Layer+Brightness/Contrast), and move my contrast up to 22. I leave the brightness alone. Leave your blend mode and opacity alone as well. We just want to enhance the contrast.

6. Final step! Make a new hue/saturation adjustment layer (Layer+New Adjustment Layer+Hue/Saturation) and bring up your saturation to somewhere around 26 in the Master mode.

That's it! This is an easy, quick way to really enhance the colors of your icon! Remember, comments are ♥, friend me if you like the tutorial, and as always, play around with your opacities and show me your results! And remember, always ask me a question if you don't understand something!

This is an AWESOME tutorial. <3 I have a feeling I'm going to be using this coloring technique a lot.

Here's one of my results, with some tweaking:

Thanks for posting this. I've been looking for ways to fix color on icons without selective coloring.

No problem!
No problem! I make that my goal lol since I don't have selective coloring. :)

Re: No problem!
It's good that someone tries. It's just great not having things like this when everything you try uses it or curves and you don't have either one.

Re: No problem!
I agree! There's so many tutorials out there I can't use because they have curves or selective coloring. :(

Re: No problem!
Yeah, and I haven't quite figured out how to work around those so I just have to avoid them.

Thank you! I love the tutorial. And, using that, and the link to the wonderful disney screen-cap site, I was finally able to make a 'bored' icon. Thanks!

ok as soon as I do this step I get a completely black screen.

. Make a new layer (shift+control+n for Photoshop users), and fill it with this color: 04072a. Set this layer to exclusion 100% opacity, and make sure it's the very top layer. What do you mean by making sure it is the very top layer?
hatbrat85[info]hatbrat85 on June 8th, 2007 04:09 am (UTC)
top layer
What I mean is it should be the very top layer in your layers list, above everything else you've already done.
